The protective programme of Ural Owl
SE POLAND
In 1994 Przemyśl Ornithology Society has started the protective action of an unusual bird - Ural Owl. Ural Owl is a real treasure amongst the birds of Poland. This bird can be found in Carpatian Mountains (in the main - Przemyśl Plateau, Bieszczady, Beskid Niski) also some of them were seen in Niepołomice Forest near Cracow. On the territory of Poland there is about 250 pairs of this beautiful owl. Beech woods located near forest,s glades - this is a perfect habitat for this kind of owl. In March a female lay 3 or 4 eggs in tree hollows or in old buzzard,s nest. They sit on the eggs for 29 days and then in May or at the beginning of June the young birds leave their nests. Lack of a suitable nesting place is the main reasone for the small number of Ural Owl. They used to nest in trees but today it is almost impossible to find such a big tree hollows. Members of our organization are trying to help them by making "hatching boxes" according to the original model which were made by the scandinavian ornithologists. The first sponsor of the protective action of the Ural Owl was "BIRD SERVICE" from Krakow.
